Have you heard the news? The Alpena area is now home to not one, not two, but THREE designated dark sky preserves! Rockport State Recreation Area, Negwegon State Park, and Thompson’s Harbor State Park have officially been given dark sky designation as of February 16, 2016…and we could not be more proud to be home of three of the six designated darky sky preserves in the state of Michigan! For stargazers and nighttime photography enthusiasts, this law ensures that these state parks will be protected from light pollution of any kind, allowing for spectacular views of the night sky above.

Each park is located on the shores of Lake Huron (hello, view!) and offers plenty of day to night adventure. By day, fossil hunt in the quarry at Rockport, walk along the picturesque sand dunes of Thompson’s Harbor, or explore the untouched nature of Negwegon.

By night, grab a blanket, a buddy, and your camera for a cosmic experience that can be found right in your backyard, yet make you feel as though you are a million miles away…
