Recently retired, William (Bill) Douros, will discuss the key opportunities and challenges facing the U.S. West Coast marine ecosystem. He will also share his perspectives on the designation of the newest national marine sanctuary, Chumash Heritage, a process he led.
Douros (a former Michigander!) retired this summer after nearly 27 years with the federal government. He spent his career at NOAA, serving as the superintendent for Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, as the first West Coast Regional Director, and also for two years as the acting Deputy Director for the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.
Before coming to NOAA, he worked for 13 years as the Deputy Director for the Planning Department for Santa Barbara County, and was responsible for managing offshore oil and gas development in that county. Bill also spent two summers as a firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service, what he describes as the best job he ever had. He has a Master’s Degree in Marine Ecology and a Bachelor’s in Environmental Biology, both from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
