A PLACE CALLED PRESQUE ISLE by Janet Young portrays the lives of those who came to this isolated peninsula in the 1800s. Drawing from lighthouse logs, government records, personal letters, journals, and newspaper articles, it illustrates the lives of lightkeepers, wood merchants and other characters that played a part in the harbor’s development. Included are tales of the steamships, the storms, the shipwrecks, the wildfires, the dinners and the dances that were the life of Presque Isle Harbor. The stories are often personal and sensitive reflections of what was important to those who lived on the remote northern shore of Lake Huron.

Stories of the vital steamboat wooding station, commercial fishing industry, and maritime accounts illustrate northeastern Michigan’s history and its enormous role in the growth and development of the Midwest frontier.
