The Alpena region is a special destination for birders as this charming coastal area is located along the Great Lakes flyway bird migration route. The ample forests, wetlands, shoreline, rivers, and open habitats of Northeast Michigan offering opportunities to see birds throughout the year and especially during migration. Local favorites include the Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary, where Island Park/Duck Park on the Thunder Bay River provide habitat for waterfowl, marsh birds, warblers, vireos, and Belted Kingfishers. Other area hotspots include Fletcher Pond in Hillman, known for Bald Eagles, Ospreys, loons, and herons; Isaacson Bay, a productive location for shorebirds; Besser Natural Area, where woodland birds and shoreline species can be found; and Partridge Point, which can be especially rewarding during spring and fall migration.

Alpena’s commitment to birds and their habitats has also earned the community recognition as a Bird City Michigan Community, now known as Bird City Michigan – Alpena. This designation celebrates communities that work to make their communities better places for birds and people through conservation, education, habitat improvement, and community engagement. Birding is an important part of the Alpena region’s outdoor heritage, and local organizations and residents continue to build awareness and appreciation for the birds that call the area home. The Bird City designation adds another reason to explore the Alpena region’s natural places, participate in local birding activities, and help protect the habitats that support birds year after year.
