Join our Big Plant! White Pine Giveaway next week!

Residents of the Alpena region are invited to participate in a unique and meaningful initiative: The Big Plant! White Pine Seedling Giveaway. We, the Alpena Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, have financed and coordinated the giveaway of 13,000 white pine trees to the Alpena region. This effort is in celebration of our natural heritage, a hands-on step toward a greener future, and to honor the land with new growth in the wake of the ice storm.

Known as the “Tree of Peace” by the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) is more than just a tree – it is a living symbol of unity, strength, and renewal. Once the backbone of Michigan’s old-growth forests, White Pines were vital to the Alpena Region’s history and economy. They are still of environmental and economic value today for a multitude of reasons and since the ice storm, the forests could use a little help.

Free White Pine seedlings will be available on a first-come, first-served basis during this special two-day event held Oct. 17 & 18, hosted by the Alpena Area Convention & Visitors Bureau with the Alpena-Montmorency Soil Conservation District. Whether you’re a seasoned arborist or just planting your first tree, this is your chance to help support a native species and leave a legacy for future generations.
