Have you always wanted to catch a sunrise, but the whole thing feels like a daunting experience because it’s just SO early?
The Lake Huron coast along Thunder Bay provides some of the best views of gorgeous sunrises over the water, here are some tips on how to catch a sunrise if you’re maybe not the most notorious early bird.

- Plan to catch the sunrise sometime in October through March. The winter is the best time because sunrise is usually around 8:00am or so, but you can usually get the official times for first light and sunrise in your weather app. 8:00am might still be early for some folks but it’s certainly later than sunrise on the summer solstice at 5:46am.
- Get coffee on the way. Stop at one of the many delicious coffee shops in Alpena to grab your first dose of caffeine for the day. It’s easier to get out the door if you don’t have to do a lot right away in the morning, and it can help make the whole experience feel like a little treat.
- Set out your clothes and supplies for the morning the night before. If it’s all ready the night before you’ll feel that much less likely to bail on your own plans.
- Make plans with friends to help hold you accountable and make it fun. Like most things in life, sunrise can be better when enjoyed with a friend.
- Pick a quick and easy spot that’s close to you to start. Like the Alpena Boat Harbor and breakwall or Starlite Beach. You don’t need to hike 6 miles first to make it a worthwhile sunrise.
- Get breakfast after as a fun reward or celebration! You did it!
