Saturday, July 1st
10:00 am – 11th Annual Alpena Thunder-Con at Art in the Loft
Attendees are able to meet and purchase items from Michigan vendors. Displays and activities that are family-friendly, include an adult and child costume contest. Demonstrations and collections for those who just want to see some cool Sci-Fi and Fantasy memorabilia. Thunder-con starts at 10:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm, Saturday AND Sunday.

Tuesday, July 4th
8:00 am – The Alpena News Sandcastle Contest
Registration to participate in the sandcastle contest begins at 8 am and judging will start at 3 pm. Come by and admire all the hard work put in by participants all day long! There will be 3 divisions – 1 to 5 builders, 6 or more builders, and a kid’s division. Winners will be announced at 4 pm. People’s Choice voting – $1 per vote which will be donated to next year’s fireworks fund. Sand sculptures will be judged on originality, use of natural resources, size, shape, and artistic form.
8:30 am – 2023 Dork Brothers 5k Run/Walk
Located at the Aplex, 701 Woodward Avenue. Registration begins early (by 8:30 am) and the run/walk will go until 10:30 am.
11:00 am – HPC Credit Union 4th of July Parade
The parade will begin at the Alpena County Fairgrounds on 11th Avenue and end in the large parking lot on the right before the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Follow the HPC Credit Union Fourth of July Parade Facebook page for updates and a live stream of the parade the day of! The parade route begins on 11th Ave., turns right onto Chisholm St., then turns left onto 2nd Ave., and finally turns left onto Fletcher St.
11:00 am – Alpena Pedal & Paddle Rentals – Kayak, SUP, Canoe, Bicycles
Looking for something fun to do to kill some time before the next event? Rent a bicycle, kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) from Alpena Pedal & Paddle at Duck Park/Island Park by the covered bridge. Cycle your way around the town or paddle your way around our wildlife sanctuary preserve. Open from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm.
11:00 am – 4th of July Party at Red Brick Tap & Barrel/808 Bowlz
Starting at 11 am, stop by the park by Red Brick Tap & Barrel and get lunch at 808 Bowlz or the River Street Vault Smoothery. Red Brick Tap & Barrel will also be open with full menu available.
6:00 pm – Live Music Outdoors at The Court Yard
Live music starts with Brian Natzel & Jim Hines from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. High Speed begins at 8:30 pm to 12:00 pm. The music will stop and the outdoor lights will dim when the fireworks show begins. Music will resume until midnight after the fireworks end. $5.00 cover charge.
7:00 pm – True North Radio Summer Concert Series presents: The Rock Show with Tommy K
It’s time to enjoy free concerts at the Bay View Park Bandshell in Alpena! This year is sure to be a fun, upbeat way to dance through our summer evenings at the park. Come out to see your favorites, and maybe something new. Come prepared if you’d like to participate in DUMB STUFF for prizes! DUMB STUFF is a game at the intermission where we ask you for Dumb Stuff, i.e. paper clips and feathers, in exchange for awesome stuff from our community-minded sponsors.
Dusk (approx. between 9:30 and 10:00 pm) – Alpena Fireworks Show at Mich-E-Ke-Wis
End your 4th of July with Alpena’s fantastic fireworks show! They are lit off between Starlite Beach and Mich-E-Ke-Wis Park at dusk (time varies). You can see them all along the Lake Huron shoreline in Alpena. Popular viewing areas include – Bay View Park Bandshell, Starlite Beach, and The Court Yard.
Wednesday, July 5th
6:00 pm – Concerts at the New Presque Isle Lighthouse
Join us at the New Presque Isle Lighthouse for a concert with Steve Rea & Friends from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm.
